How often to change soil in potted plants

During the beginning of spring, I like to prune my houseplants. While I'm pruning the plants, I usually  top the plants with fresh potting mix. I usually do not change the entire soil mixture, but instead feed the  soil plant food every two to four weeks. It is vital that the soil hold nutrients for the healthy growth of the plants.
